Kinja'd!!!

My son has a new Acer Chromebook that he’s using for school. He is listening though Apple plug-in headphones with built in mic. The headphones work fine, but he’s convinced that the mic used to work and now doesn’t. Though I’ve read various sources online that say the mic should work, it is my belief that he was using the internal mic and didn’t know it.

Does anybody know if the mic should work? These CBs are pretty short on settings, it’s either on or off, so I think we just have a basic compatibility issue here.

Edit : Turns out it was a bum headset. Tried another and it worked.

Know  nothing about chromebooks, but I’d be surprised if they didn’t support the headphone mic, that seems pretty standard these days.

man...so many variables.  I guess you should check the manufactures page for detailed specs on the port.  Does it use three rings (support a mic)?

Me too, but Apple. The mic does not work on a Windows box, as far as I can tell.

Three rings on the mic jack?

Yes, three rings on the jack.

yeah, 2 rings for headphones, 3 rings for headphones plus mic (on the chromebook side)

I could be wrong but I think Apple wires their headset jacks differently to others.

That’s what I’m thinking, but there are all sorts of posts on the internet saying that they work. Or at least that they should.

Are you sure the mic on the headphones work? I have a set of apple headphones with the 3.5mm jack and the mic works great on my windows laptop or my android phone. The volume buttons do not work on either, but the center button works on the android.

That’s certainly worth checking out. Thx.

Just to throw it out there, have you double checked the settings in Zoom or whatever he’s using for the video conference? I’ve seen it where that setting will be for the built-in even if another mic is plugged in.

He’s using Google or something. I tried making a video on the CB, with external mic selected and got nothing. Switching to internal worked. I’m going to try with a different set.

Probably Hangouts or I guess Meet is what they call it now. I’m glad you found the solution.

Not yet, but we’ll be picking up a new ChromeBook for my youngest on Thursday. We’ll have to stay in touch on our new role of providing tech support to children.

My house is #DadLife x 3. At least our kids are old enough to be relatively self reliant. I’ve got a friend who is home trying to wrangle a three year old while helping his kindergartner with online school while his wife teaches online. Crazy.

I’ve got two and like yourself, mine are old enough to be self-reliant (kind of) so I’ve had a relatively easy ride other than having a part time job as a short order cook.

Dawg, I feel so bad for my friends that have young kids. One of my oldest friends had his first kid in March and one of my rugby buddies had his first kid in June, the shit is tragic.

Watching this thread closely as my oldest starts kindergarten on a CB next week. Ugh. This is going to suck.

I’ve worked on the Google show many times, I’ve seen them in the displays, but no I have never used one. Once during the show move in they had a pallet of them and one of the teamsters said, hey they got tons of laptops over here (teamsters are often Hells Angels here and often end up with things from shows, go figure) and another guy said, nah those are chromebooks!

Oh yeah. There’s an 18 month old in the mix too. We’re both working from home until at least the first of the year or likely this time next year.

I might have something like that in the garage. They’re kids; they want the white earbuds.

A Chromebook is definitely not a laptop, it’s an Internet appliance. And as such, if you pay enough, they’re pretty good. They will see our boys through high school, but we’ll get our oldest a proper laptop when he goes to college.

Yeah exactly - I have a chromebook for internetting on my couch when I don’t want my work laptop. It’s light, simple, and just works - I did get a good one on super sale in early January a couple years ago. But trying to do much more on it... yeah nope. I put Linux on it for a while but that just made it annoying to do anything, which is missing the point of a simple internet device.

That BIOs is pretty smart. So. Yeah.

Ive had Chromebooks work with several audio DACs where I thought “this will never work”.

It PnPs way better than Windows ever did
